Getting past road blocks
A question I’ve been asking a lot lately is - What does it really cost to change?
We have point A - where we are today…
and then we have point B - where we want to be.
The gap between where we are and where we want to be can often feel like a deep canyon versus a shallow pothole in the ground.
I think success comes from two things.
The first is Consistency.
Change is going to require consistency…and from a practical standpoint that only requires 3 things.
1. Isolate out the change that needs to be made. Pick one goal at a time to focus on.
2. Focus on incremental improvement. Research is showing that small, incremental gains over time allow you to stay focused and motivated.
3. Get unemotional. Our brain is our most taxing organ. It is complex. There are two parts. The right and left brain. And boy - it uses a lot of energy. It’s why we sometimes feel mentally sluggish or lazy, especially when faced with a challenge, like consistency. Sometimes we really are tired. Sometimes, though, it’s a biological trick …
Don’t fall for it. Push forward. Remove your feelings from the equation. If you don’t, you’ll stay stuck.
The second is Timeline.
The process of becoming requires timeline. And timeline is often relative to the individual and what the change is. Everyone has their own race to run. Your timeline will not be someone else’s. If the rule of 10,000 hours to mastery is true - then theoretically every 4.5 years we can completely reinvent ourselves and show mastery of something new. Every decade, we could remaster something new.
You may not have control of your timeline. But you can control your consistency.
